Michigan

In 1996, to see if gas regulation could help towards a competitive market, there was a time frame put in place to decide if it would be beneficial. With encouraging results, in 2000 the MPSC expanded gas customer choice to all customers across Michigan.

Michigan consumers can choose from several retail suppliers serving their local area, with hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and residential customers purchasing energy from an alternate gas supplier instead of their utility.

It has been a huge success, with Michigan’s consumers receiving lower prices and better reliability. In 2009 there were just 20 licensed alternate gas suppliers, however, there are now more than 30 licensed alternate gas suppliers serving over half a million customers across Michigan.
