In 1996, deregulation in New Hampshire began. The New Hampshire legislation (RSA 374-F) meant that in early 1998, consumers could decide who supplied their energy. In The United States, New Hampshire was one of the first states that were successful in passing a new electricity distribution act.
Liberty Utilities was the first electric company, with full deregulation only taking place in 2003 throughout the whole state. The New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission (NHPUC) is responsible for serving the whole state.
Today, the energy market in New Hampshire is completely deregulated, with many different electricity providers available for consumers. This rise in electricity providers resulting in many benefits and offers on the market.
These independent energy companies saw the opportunity to offer green energy, with some helping in reducing carbon emissions as well as using renewable energy resources like solar and wind energy.
Even with these offers and benefits, New Hampshire ranks as some of the most expensive in the United States. When it comes to the most expensive average retail price of electricity in the residential sector, New Hampshire sits in eighth place among other states.
There have been attempts to promote more choice for customers, however, these have failed, as well as plans for cleaning up electric generation. As of 2012, only 5% of residential consumers switched electric suppliers, with some residents unaware they can choose a new electric supplier.
However, in New Hampshire, consumers are not required to choose a deregulated energy supplier. The local utility can be used if that suits their needs the best.
