In 1998, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission passed the ruling that consumers could choose to purchase their natural gas supply from independent gas suppliers, rather than from their local utility company. However, in Indiana, electricity is not deregulated.
There has been a huge rise in consumers purchasing their natural gas supply from other suppliers, with hundreds of thousands of industrial, commercial, and residential customers making the switch. Citizens Gas are the main natural gas company in Indiana, serving the majority of the state. They bring the natural gas to consumers and own the infrastructure.
